USB 2.0, USB 3.0, or FireWire – What is the recommended solution for data storage?

June 29th, 2010 Comments off

1. What is USB 2.0?

USB 2.0, USB 3.0, Firewire USB 2.0 is the industry standard peripheral connection type for most x86 computers (Windows based). This specification is rated with maximum transfer rate of 480Mb/s (60MB/s). Sustained transfer rate of USB 2.0 depends on many factors including type of device in use, data being transferred, and speed of the computer system. A normal sustained data transfer rate for USB 2.0 ranges from 10-30 MB/s. Only burst data transfers can reach the 480Mb/s rate.

What are the benefits of USB 2.0?

  • USB 2.0 is "hot swappable," eliminating the need to reboot or restart your

The Purpose Of Computer Forensics

February 18th, 2010 Comments off

Computer Forensics Computer forensics is the branch of forensic science that examines evidence stored digitally on a hard drive or other data storage medium.

History

Computer forensics can be traced back to the beginning of the 1990s when computers began to be integrated into our daily existence. DIBS USA was one of the first computer forensics companies to emerge.

Function

Computer forensics is about the preservation and extraction of data. Data is often found in server logs or on suspects’ hard drives. Since every move on a computer leaves a footprint, forensic experts have to find out how to tie that…

Computer Data Storage Types And Data Storage Devices With the increasing use of technology, usage of digital data has increased to no limits. In order to store this enormous amount of data, we need more powerful and secured data storage devices. Development teams all over the world are working around the clock to make better devices which would be small and inexpensive, but at the same time having more capacity and security.

These are the types of data storage used in computers. Advancing technologies these days are increasing the access rate and the capacity of these data storage devices.

Samsung Introduces High-Capacity 250 Gigabyte 1.8" Hard Drives

July 13th, 2009 Comments off

Samsung 250GB 1.8 Hard Drive Samsung announced its 250 Gigabyte (GB) 1.8 inch hard disk drive, the Spinpoint N3U which incorporates a native USB controller on its printed circuit board. This optimized design results in a smaller foot print, less power consumption and optimized performance, which is ideal for portable external storage devices. The Spinpoint N3U stores up to 125 Gigabytes per platter for a total 250GB data storage capacity.

Most external hard drives require the addition of a bridge circuit board to convert the hard drive’s PATA interface into a USB interface. Samsung’s N3U drive, however, uses a native USB interface…

What risks do viruses pose to the data on internal or external hard drive?

July 10th, 2009 Comments off

Rirus Recovery When it comes to data storage, viruses can be divided into two basic categories:

  • Viruses that delete data.
  • Viruses that corrupt data.

Viruses that delete data will tell the Operating System (such as Windows) to flag files as being deleted. The data itself becomes unavailable but it still exists on the platters until it’s overwritten. This data is recoverable using 3rd-party data recovery softwares which will scan the platters and mark recognizable files as not deleted, effectively restoring them to the directory structure.

Viruses that corrupt data are the most dangerous because they overwrite
